Filtering Transactions

Filters help you focus on specific types of transactions, making it easier to find what you’re looking for and analyze your spending patterns. You can filter by account, transaction type, categorization status, and more.
Why Use Filters?
Filters are useful when you want to:
- Find specific transactions - Narrow down to a particular account or category
- Review uncategorized items - Focus only on transactions that need attention
- Analyze spending - See all transactions for a specific category
- Separate income from expenses - View only one type
- Check manual entries - See only transactions you created
- Partner review - See who categorized which transactions
How to Open Filters
Step 1: Navigate to Transactions tab

Go to the Transactions tab (shown in screenshot above).
Step 2: Open filter drawer

Tap any of the filter pills at the top (Status, Type, Transfer, Account, People, Source). The filter drawer opens from the bottom showing filter options (shown in screenshot above).
Method 2: After Applying
Once you have active filters, the filter pills become visible. Tap any pill to modify that specific filter.
Available Filters
Account Filter
Filter by specific bank accounts to see transactions from only one source.
To use:
- Open filter drawer
- Select “Transaction Account”
- Check one or more accounts
- Tap “Apply Filter”
Use cases:
- Review spending from one credit card
- Check transactions from checking account only
- Isolate savings account transfers
- Focus on specific institution
Example: Select “Chase Checking ••1234” to see only transactions from that account.
Type Filter
Filter by Income or Expense to separate money coming in from money going out.
Options:
- All Types - Show everything (default)
- Income - Only money coming in
- Expense - Only money going out
Use cases:
- Review all income sources for the month
- Focus on expenses only
- Verify paycheck deposits
- Calculate total spending
Example: Select “Income” to see salary, side hustle payments, and refunds.
Transfer Filter
Filter transactions based on whether they’re transfers between your accounts.
Options:
- All - Show everything (default)
- Is Transfer - Only transfers between your accounts
- Not Transfer - Exclude transfers
Use cases:
- Review all account transfers
- Exclude transfers from budget analysis
- Find transfers that need correction
- Separate real spending from money movement
Example: Select “Not Transfer” to see only actual spending and income, excluding money you moved between accounts.
Status Filter
Filter by categorization status to find transactions that need attention.
Options:
- All Status - Show everything (default)
- Categorized - Only transactions with assigned categories
- Uncategorized - Only transactions without categories
Use cases:
- Focus on uncategorized items that need your attention
- Review what’s already been categorized
- Verify all transactions have categories
- Clean up backlog of uncategorized items
Example: Select “Uncategorized” to see only transactions that need categories assigned.
Person Filter
Filter by which profile categorized the transaction (useful for couples).
Options:
- All People - Show everything (default)
- Individual profiles (e.g., “John”, “Sarah”)
Use cases:
- See what your partner categorized
- Review your own categorization work
- Find transactions categorized by specific person
- Coordinate who’s handling which transactions
Example: Select “Sarah” to see all transactions that Sarah categorized.
Data Source Filter
Filter by how the transaction entered Balance.
Options:
- All Sources - Show everything (default)
- Manual - Only transactions you manually entered
- Bank - Only transactions synced from banks
Use cases:
- Review manual entries for accuracy
- Check bank-synced transactions
- Find manual entries that may duplicate bank transactions
- Audit manual vs automatic data
Example: Select “Manual” to see only transactions you added yourself (cash purchases, pending items, etc.).
Combining Filters
You can apply multiple filters at the same time to narrow down your view even further.
Filters work together with AND logic:
- Each filter further narrows the results
- Only transactions matching ALL filters show
Example Combinations
Find uncategorized expenses:
- Type: Expense
- Status: Uncategorized Result: Only expense transactions that need categorizing
Review partner’s income categorization:
- Type: Income
- Person: Sarah Result: Only income transactions Sarah categorized
Check manual non-transfer expenses:
- Data Source: Manual
- Type: Expense
- Transfer: Not Transfer Result: Only manual expense entries that aren’t transfers
Isolate credit card spending needing categories:
- Account: Chase Credit Card ••5678
- Status: Uncategorized Result: Only uncategorized transactions from that card
Active Filter Pills
Once you apply filters, colored pills appear at the top of your transaction list showing what’s active.
Each pill shows:
- Filter type icon
- Current filter value
- X button to remove
Example pills:
- “Chase Checking ••1234” (Account filter)
- “Income” (Type filter)
- “Uncategorized” (Status filter)
Managing Active Filters
To modify a filter:
- Tap the filter pill
- Drawer opens to that filter
- Change selection
- Tap “Apply Filter”
To remove a filter:
- Tap the X on the filter pill
- Filter immediately removes
- Transaction list updates
To clear all filters:
- Tap “Clear All” at the end of the filter pills
- All filters remove at once
- Full transaction list returns
Practical Filter Workflows
Monday Morning Routine
- Open Transactions
- Filter: Status = Uncategorized
- Categorize all weekend transactions
- Clear filters
- Done!
Monthly Income Verification
- Filter: Type = Income
- Review all income for the month
- Verify paychecks deposited
- Check for expected income
- Total should match expected
Reviewing Partner’s Work
- Filter: Person = Partner’s name
- See everything they categorized
- Check for any miscategorizations
- Discuss categories if needed
Credit Card Reconciliation
- Filter: Account = Specific credit card
- Review all transactions
- Compare to credit card statement
- Verify all are accounted for
Finding Cash Purchases
- Filter: Data Source = Manual
- Filter: Type = Expense
- Review all manual expenses
- Check for any duplicates when bank syncs

Quick Filters
- Daily: Status = Uncategorized (catch new items fast)
- Weekly: Account = Each account (review account by account)
- Monthly: Person filter (partner coordination)
Efficiency Tips
- Use Status = Uncategorized filter daily to stay on top of new transactions
- Combine Account + Uncategorized to categorize account by account
- Clear filters after each session to see full picture
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting active filters - Always check for filter pills before thinking transactions are missing
- Over-filtering - Too many filters might show no results
- Not clearing filters - Leaving filters active causes confusion later
Power User Techniques
- Sequential filtering - Apply one filter, categorize those, clear, apply next
- Partner coordination - Person filter to divide categorization work

Troubleshooting
No Transactions Showing
Check if filters are active:
- Look for filter pills at top
- Your filters may be too restrictive
- Try clearing all filters
- Verify you’re viewing correct month
Common causes:
- Active filters narrowed to zero results
- Account filter for account with no transactions this month
- Status = Categorized but all transactions are uncategorized
- Person filter for profile that hasn’t categorized anything
Filter Not Working
If filter doesn’t seem to apply:
- Make sure you tapped “Apply Filter”
- Check filter pill appeared at top
- Try removing and reapplying
- Clear all filters and start fresh
- Restart app if persistent
Can’t Find Specific Transaction
Search strategy:
- Clear all existing filters
- Select correct month
- Apply filters one at a time
- Check transaction isn’t hidden/archived
- Verify transaction has synced
