Transactions
Balance pulls transactions from your connected bank accounts automatically. You can also add transactions manually and categorize everything to match your budget.
Categorizing Transactions
There are three ways to categorize:
When assigning a category, you can type to search by name instead of scrolling through the full list.
Quick Categorize
Tap the category icon on any transaction to assign a category immediately. You don’t need to open the transaction details. This is the fastest way to categorize one at a time.
Bulk Categorize
Press and hold any transaction to enter selection mode. Tap additional transactions to select them, then assign one category to all selected transactions at once. Great for catching up on a batch of similar purchases.
Transaction Details
Tap a transaction (not the icon) to open the full detail page. From here you can assign a category, split the transaction, toggle the transfer flag, and see all transaction metadata.
Split Transactions
On the transaction detail page, you can split a single transaction across multiple categories. For example, a grocery store purchase that included household supplies.
- Add categories and assign an amount to each
- All amounts must add up to the transaction total
Transfer Toggle
On the transaction detail page, toggle Transfer on to exclude a transaction from your budget totals. Transfers are automatically marked as resolved and don’t require a category, though you can still assign one if you’d like. Use this for money moving between your own accounts: checking to savings, credit card payments, or similar transfers.
Transfers still appear in your transaction list but won’t count as income or spending. If a transfer is showing up as an expense in your budget, open it and toggle Transfer on. See Troubleshooting for more.
Filters
The transactions page has several filters to help you find what you need:
- Person: See only transactions categorized by you or your partner
- Uncategorized: Show only transactions that haven’t been categorized yet
- Account: Filter by a specific bank account
- Type: Income or expense
- Transfer: Show or hide transfers
- Status: Filter by transaction status
- Data provider: Bank-synced or manually added
Combine filters to narrow your view. The uncategorized filter is especially useful for staying on top of new transactions.
Manual Transactions
Tap the + button to add a transaction manually. Use this for cash purchases or anything that doesn’t come through your bank. Manual transactions work exactly like bank-synced ones: you can categorize, split, and filter them.
Hide Transactions per Account
If you have accounts you don’t need in your daily view (investment accounts, for example), you can hide their transactions. Go to the account settings and toggle Show Transactions off. The account stays connected but its transactions won’t clutter your list. See Bank Accounts for details.
Pull-to-Refresh
Pull down on the transactions page to check for new transactions from your bank. Balance syncs automatically, but pull-to-refresh gives you an on-demand update.
