How Your Credentials Are Stored
Security Details
Your Balance credentials are stored using your device’s Secure Enclave or Keystore:
- Encrypted storage - Your password is encrypted before storing
- Biometric-protected - Only accessible with your biometric
- Device-only - Never leaves your device
- Hardware security - Uses device’s built-in security chip
- Balance never sees it - We don’t have access to stored credentials
What Gets Stored
- Encrypted refresh token - Lets Balance keep you logged in
- Not your password - Your actual password is never stored
- Device-specific - Each device stores its own credentials
What Doesn’t Get Stored
- ❌ Your biometric data (stays in device secure area)
- ❌ Your actual password in plain text
- ❌ Banking credentials
- ❌ Financial account information
Disabling Biometric Login
How to Turn It Off
- Open Balance app
- Log in (with biometric or password)
- Open the side menu
- Toggle “Login with Face ID/Fingerprint” to OFF
- Confirm you want to disable
- You’ll see a confirmation message
After disabling:
- Stored credentials are deleted from your device
- You’ll need to enter your password on next login
- Your Balance account and data remain unchanged
When to Disable
Consider disabling biometric login if:
- Selling your device - Remove credentials before transferring
- Sharing device temporarily - Prevent others from accessing
- Security concern - If you think someone else used your biometric
- Changing devices - Disable on old device before switching
- Privacy preference - You prefer manual password entry
Common Questions
Q: Is biometric login secure?
A: Yes! Biometric authentication is generally more secure than passwords. Your biometric data never leaves your device, and stored credentials are encrypted.
Q: Can someone use my fingerprint/face while I’m sleeping?
A: Modern biometric systems have liveness detection. Face ID requires attention and eyes open. However, for maximum security, you can disable biometric and use a password.
Q: What if I change my Face ID or fingerprint?
A: Biometric login should continue working. Your device manages the biometric data, not Balance. You may need to re-enable if you completely reset biometrics.
Q: Does biometric login work offline?
A: Yes! Initial authentication is done locally on your device. However, Balance needs internet to sync data after logging in.
Q: Can both my partner and I use biometric login on the same device?
A: Only one person’s credentials can be stored per device. If you share a device, the last person to enable biometric login will have theirs saved. Consider using separate devices.
Q: Will I ever need my password if I use biometric login?
A: Yes, occasionally:
- After app updates (sometimes)
- If biometric fails multiple times
- When logging in on a new device
- After changing your password
- If you disable and re-enable biometric
Q: Does this work on iPad or tablets?
A: Yes! As long as your iPad or Android tablet has biometric hardware (Touch ID, Face ID, fingerprint sensor).
